Monsoon Gathers Momentum Over South Gujarat

After a somewhat stalled beginning, the Southwest Monsoon is making its presence felt across Gujarat, with Surat and other districts in the southern part of the state bracing for a significant wet spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in rainfall activity, issuing alerts for heavy to very heavy downpours in the coming days.

Orange Alert for Surat and Adjoining Districts

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for several districts in South Gujarat, including Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Dang, and Tapi, from July 3rd to July 5th. An Orange Alert signifies a warning to "be prepared," as the expected weather conditions have the potential to disrupt daily life. Residents in these areas can anticipate heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions.

Alongside the heavy rain, forecasts also predict thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in many parts of the state. A Yellow Alert, indicating a need to "be updated," has also been issued for some districts in Central Gujarat and the Saurashtra region.

The Southwest Monsoon's arrival in Gujarat was later than its usual date of around June 15th, officially reaching Surat around June 24th. After its initial onset, the monsoon's progress was slow, even stalling over Surat for a few days. However, current meteorological conditions have become favourable for its advancement. According to the IMD, a trough active from the North Arabian Sea is helping to increase rainfall activity. The monsoon is now expected to advance into the remaining parts of Gujarat over the next few days.
